About TempAg

TempAg initiates assessments and provides insight into the state of the science around sustainable agricultural production systems at multiple levels across the temperate zone.

Through its activities, TempAg enables policy makers, funding bodies, scientists, and other decision makers, to align national and transnational research agendas to allow innovations and policy interventions for sustainable agriculture in temperate zones. The network currently consists of 10 member countries, however, other countries are encouraged to join TempAg. For contact information for the TempAg secretariat, or to join the TempAg network, visit the Join us section.

About Peter

Professor Peter Gregory is Chair of the TempAg network. He is a soil scientist by profession and is currently a Visiting Scientist with the Institute of Bio-and Geosciences (Plant Sciences programme) at the Forschungszentrum, Jülich in Germany. He is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Reading (UK) where he recently retired as Professor of Global Food Security. He was Chief Executive of East Malling Research from 2011 until 2015 and Chief Executive at SCRI, Dundee for six years (2005 until 2011). Peter is employed in various consultancy roles developing science and research strategies. He is engaged with the UK agriculture and horticulture industries via his chairmanship of the Recommended List Board for the AHDB and the Science Advisory Committee of the Royal Horticultural Society. He also chairs the Advisory Committee for Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP) for the Food Standards Agency which undertakes risk assessments to inform the Agency's position in European forums.

Professor Pirjo Peltonen-Sainio

About Pirjo

Professor Pirjo Peltonen-Sainio works at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), Management and Production of Renewable Resources. She is a crop scientist and agronomist with wide experience in large-scale research programmes, and in leading multidisciplinary collaboration projects. Her research focuses on the adaptation of crops - and production systems - to conditions at northern latitudes and to climate change. Issues of sustainable intensification of production systems, self-sufficiency in Nordic regions and food security, lie behind her work on the influence of environmental, climatic and genetic variation on field crop production. As an expert in crop production, she has wide connections to industries operating at all stages of the food production chain.


About Luke

The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is a research and expert organisation that works to advance the bioeconomy and the sustainable use of natural resources. Researchers and specialists working in Luke provide new solutions towards the sustainable development of the Finnish bioeconomy and the promotion of new biobased businesses. Sustainable use of natural resources calls for advances in know-how and new business models – as well as close collaboration. Luke brings together experts in natural resources and sustainable food production, and this subsequently makes it one of the most multi-disciplinary research institutes worldwide. It also carries out statutory government work. Luke also monitors natural resources, certify plant production, inspect control agents, store genetic resources, produce data on greenhouse gases, support natural resource policies and produce Finland’s official food and natural resource statistics.

Dr Jean-Francois Soussana

About Jean-Francois

Since 2010, Dr Jean-Francois Soussana has been scientific director for environment at Inra, Paris, France. He obtained his PhD in plant physiology at USTL Montpellier in 1986 after a degree in agronomy. After becoming a senior scientist he led,an Inra research unit on grassland ecosystems and global change for 8 years. Since 1998, Dr. Soussana has been a member of the Working Group II of IPCC on Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability. He was Lead Author for the Third, Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports in the field of agriculture, forests and ecosystems and shared with all authors of IPCC the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2007. He has contributed to international research programs (GCTE, Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems; GCP, Global Carbon Project) and to scientific expertise for FAO. He has coordinated research projects on climate change and agriculture and currently leads a large European (FP7) project on livestock and climate change involving four continents.

Stefan Lange

About Stefan

Stefan is an agricultural scientist and works as Research Director at Thünen Institute - Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries. Together with the President he is responsible for conceptual alignment and strategic development of Thünen Institute as well as for policy advice regarding research planning, funding priorities etc. So at national level he is deeply engaged in activities of German Agricultural Research Alliance (DAFA). On European scale he counsels German Horizon 2020 and FACCE-JPI representatives. On international scale he is delegate to G20-MACS (Meeting of Chief Agricultural Scientists of G20 States) and German representative in TempAg Governing Board. After working at university and before joining Thünen Institute, Stefan headed agricultural research funding schemes for several years. His experiences based on this repeated change of perspectives between science, funders and policy form the background for his current activities


About The Thünen Institute

Thünen Institute is Germany's major research institution for the rational use of natural resources and an independent Federal Research Institute under the auspices of German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). Thünen Institute consists of 14 specialised institutes that carry out research, conduct longterm monitorings and provide policy advice for German Federal Government, European Commission, FAO, OECD etc. in the fields of economy, ecology and technology. Objective of these tasks and efforts is the sustainable development of rural areas, agriculture, forestry, utilization of wood, and fisheries. Furthermore Thünen Institute advises political decision-makers and research funding bodies concerning coherent future research strategies at national, European and international level. In terms of best possible global coordination of agricultural research for instance Thünen Institute together with BMEL participates in the annual "Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists of G20 States (MACS-G20)" and is entitled to represent Germany in TempAg.

Professor Martin van Ittersum

About Martin

Professor Martin van Ittersum holds a PhD (1992) in Agricultural and Environmental Science in Wageningen University. His research and teaching focus on research concepts and methods for the analysis, design, and integreated assessment of agricultural systems from field to farm, regional and global level.  He has led and is leading a large number of (inter)national projects dealing with global food availability, integrated assessment of agricultural systems, yield gap analysis, phosphorus scarcity and climate change, furthermore he was the coordinator of the SEAMLESS project: System for Environmental and Agricultural Modelling; Linking European Science and Society; an EU FP6 project (2005-2009) with 30 universities and approximately 150 researchers.Currently he is co-leading the Global Yield Gap Atlas project (funded by the Gates foundation) and a large strategic programme of Wageningen University aiming to map options for sustainable intensification

Professor Richard McDowell

About Richard

Professor McDowell is the Chief Scientist for the National Science Challenge: Our Land and Water, a Principal Scientist at AgResearch and Professor of soil and water quality at Lincoln University. He has degrees from Lincoln and Cambridge Universities. Before joining AgResearch 15 years ago he was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Research Service involved in nutrient research and aiding in policy development. He is a fellow of the New Zealand Society of Soil Science, and has written over 300 books and journal articles on soil and water quality issues. He has a special interest in providing options and tools to mitigate water quality contamination from a variety of land uses, while maintaining profitable primary production enterprises.

Professor McDowell is the Theme leader for “Delivering resilient agricultural production systems at multiple spatial and temporal scales”. He co-facilitated a workshop at the TempAg kick-off meeting in Paris 2015. The workshop defined a research question for a pilot activity (PA1.1): “How can sustainability frameworks, metrics and tools and their implementation be enhanced to future-proof agricultural decision making at multiple levels on multiple scales?”. Outputs exploring this question are described in the pilot activity for Theme 1, and the proceedings of the 12th European International Farming Systems Association.


About Ag Research

Agriculture is New Zealand's largest export income earner. AgResearch plays a key role in delivering new knowledge and technologies which underpin the pastoral, agri-food and agri-technology value chains. We lead or partner with other providers to research the following areas:

• Pasture-based animal production systems

• New pasture plant varieties

• Agriculture-derived greenhouse gas mitigation and pastoral climate change adaption

• Integrated social and biophysical research to support pastoral, agri-food and agri-technology sector development.

• Biosecurity, land, soil and freshwater management

• Food and beverage sector (including foods for human nutrition and health, food technologies and food safety).

AgResearch is also the host of the New Zealand National Science Challenge – Our Land and Water. The Challenge has a 10-year horizon to invest in research that: enhances primary sector production and productivity while maintaining and improving our land and water quality for future generations.

About the Norwegian Institute for Bioeconomy Research

The Norwegian Institute for Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) specialises in research encompassing food quality and safety, agriculture and rural development, environmental and water protection and natural resources management. The R&D activities of NIBIO are organised in seven research divisions, located in different regions of Norway. NIBIO expertise is in a wide range of areas of natural sciences, with long traditions in field- and laboratory-based experimental studies. This includes the development and application of various tools and models for management- and policy support linked to agriculture and environment.

About Erik

Dr Erik Fahlbeck is Vice President for Collaboration at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) after being Deputy Director and chief analyst at the Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation. Prior to that he worked as a lecturer in Agricultural Economics at SLU, and chief analyst at the Ministry of Agriculture. Erik was also vice dean at SLU's then-NL-faculty, with responsibility for education and business contacts. He has also been secretary in a number of governmental investigations and has had several assignments in the OECD.


About Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has a long tradition of collaborating with industry and the community to ensure that the knowledge being developed at the university will benefit, with an comprehensive knowledge of the sustainable use of biological natural resources, as well as of the environmental and life sciences. Its activities span from genes and molecules to biodiversity, animal health, bioenergy and food supply. Urban and regional planning, sustainable urban and rural development and global issues such as climate change are also on the agenda. The work the institution undertakes is about how we can use biological natural resources from forests, soil and water without exhausting them and while preserving welfare for humans and animals alike.

About Lukas

Dr Lukas Bertschinger is a research director and deputy head of Agroscope's Institute of Plant Production Sciences IPS and the delegate of International Research Cooperation of Corporate Research Agroscope. He holds an engineer degree in Agronomy and a Ph.D. in plant pathology of ETH at Zürich, Switzerland. His research career evolved by working for the international as well as the Swiss agri-food R&D system (CGIAR centers CIP and CIMMYT, and Agroscope). He represents Agroscope in the Governing Bodies of the International Society of Horticultural Sciences (ISHS), the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO), the International Center on Insect Physiology and Ecology at Nairobi (ICIPE) and the establishment of the OECD Collaborative Research Network on Sustainable Temperate Agriculture

Agroscope is the Swiss centre of excellence for agricultural research, and is affiliated with the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG). Agroscope researches along the entire value chain of the agriculture and the food sector. Its goals are a competitive and multifunctional agricultural sector, high-quality food for a healthy diet, and an intact environment. In pursuing these aims, the research institute gears itself to the needs of its service recipients.

Professor Tim Benton

About Tim

Professor Tim Benton is the 'Champion' for the UK’s Global Food Security programme.The role of the Champion is to act as a leader, coordinator and facilitator of the programme and to act as an ambassador both for the programme and the area. Tim facilitates knowledge exchange between research and stakeholders in government, industry and society. He worked in the University of East Anglia, then the Universities of Stirling and Aberdeen before moving to Leeds in 2005. At Leeds, he has been head of his department and Pro-Dean for Research in the Faculty of Biological Sciences, and the Chair of Africa College, a University partnership with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture in Africa. He has published over 100 papers, most tackling the core themes of agriculture’s environmental impact and more generally how ecological systems respond to environmental change. Tim is also a vocal advocate for the issues of how to manage increasing demand for food in a way that is sustainable.


About The Global Food Security programme

The Global Food Security programme is a partnership of the UK’s main public funders of research in food security, including the Research Councils and UK Government departments, including Defra, DfID and the Food Standards’ Agency, as well as the Scottish Government and Welsh Assembly Government. The role of the Global Food Security programme is to ensure that strategically important research is undertaken in related sciences, and to add value to research using interdisciplinary collaboration, alignment and engagement with communities of stakeholders. 

The programme has three themes. 'Resilience' examines how poor environmental and economic esilience leads to hunger, poverty and environmental degradationacross the global, and how this can be addressed. 'Sustainable production and supply' focuses on the sustainable use of resources - improving efficiency, reducing waste and food production from crops and animals. 'Nutrition, health and wellbeing' examines food safety and quality throughout the supply chain, nutrition, healthy and sustainable diets, and understanding consumer behaviour.

Dr Jo Cadilhon

About Jo

Dr Jo Cadilhon holds a degree in agricultural sciences and two MSc degrees from AgroParisTech: one in geography and development; the second in public rural administration. He also holds a PhD in food marketing from Imperial College London and a degree in Chinese language and civilisation from the Paris Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilisations. Jo Cadilhon has worked at the French Ministry of agriculture as an analyst on trade and development, and as an evaluation officer within its Centre for Studies and Strategic Foresight. He has worked at FAO’s regional office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok where he was a marketing expert on agrifood quality improvement. He has also worked as a Senior Agro-Economist studying developing country value chains and innovation platforms at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi. Within the Natural Resources Policy Division of OECD, he contributes to the monitoring and evaluation of the environmental impact of agricultural policies and is the US country desk officer.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) promotes policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world. OECD provides a forum in which governments can work together to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems, and works with governments to understand what drives economic, social and environmental change. Under the auspices of the OECD's Global Science Forum, TempAg was established in April 2015, when its inaugural meeting took place. TempAg was established and launched by the GSF which had developed and authorised its Terms of Reference (ToR) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for members.
